My Literary Inspiration

For Colored Girls, is a 1975 experimental choreopoem by Ntozake Shange. The title alone directly speaks to me in numbers. As a young Black woman in America, like the women of the book, I have been faced withthings in life that has had me question my mental health and stability. Yet, I have found outlets to channel negative thoughts and energy and defeat my demons. The women of For Colored Girls each had battles that they fought. They did not come out of the war scarless, but they came out alive.

"Being alive and being a woman is all I got, but being colored is a metaphysical dilemma I haven't conquered yet." Shange, (1975)

I am a flower, therefore I am made to endure seasons that will test me - physically, psychologically, and spiritually.
